Data Search & Discovery: Search Meets Reporting

Today, we’re all accustomed to keying in a few words and receiving a rich collection of results, usually from documents or Web pages. If the search engine is one of the better ones, we’ll have the option of navigating the results in some logical fashion, iteratively filtering out the results that don’t interest us and homing in on the information that does.

Data search and discovery is our term for applying search interfaces and capabilities to the discovery of relationships and information within and across not documents but databases. This activity is sometimes called ad-hoc query, an unattractive name. While shouting “ad-hoc query” in a crowd will not clear the room quite as rapidly as shouting “metadata management,” the phrase does not whet the appetite to learn more.
